Italy's roads, as they flow
Zoom in anywhere in Italy and every road TomTom has a live reading for comes up coloured by how fast it runs against its free-flow speed. This site holds each reading at most two minutes, on top of TomTom's own delay. Tap a province to zoom to it, or find a town by name. Zoomed in, tap a town: the streets TomTom reads there come up one by one, live, with the filling stations around it and the prices they declare. Como, with every reading kept, has its own page.
The readings. TomTom's live traffic flow tiles, the "relative delay" style: each road is coloured by its current speed against its free-flow speed, from TomTom's own measurements of the vehicles that report to it. A tile is fetched through this site with the key kept on the server and held two minutes, so everyone looking at the same place in those two minutes shares one reading. No tile holds a single car, a count of cars, a plate or a person.
Street by street. A tap reads, for every tile within 1.2 km of the point, TomTom's map tile, which names each road, and its live flow tiles in two styles, against free flow and in km/h, then matches each stretch of flow to the named road it runs along; a stretch with no sure match stays unnamed. The km/h and the share of free flow are TomTom's own. Every tap is read fresh and kept nowhere, and the readings serve this page only. The page takes at most 2,000 TomTom tiles a day for these readings, so the Como readings keep their share of the free quota.
The fuel prices. From the ministry's own station search (Osservaprezzi carburanti), the stations within 4 km of the tap with the prices each last declared, and when. When the search does not answer, the ministry's daily file stands in, and the panel says so.
The colours. TomTom's: green runs free, orange slows, red crawls, dark red stands still, grey is closed. A road with no colour has no reading in that tile.
