How it counts

Time: car trips x the minutes each loses to traffic, plus the minutes late on trains, plus the slower car trips, each week, times the weeks.
Energy: the hours in traffic x the litres an hour a car burns standing. The example takes the lowest figure in Argonne National Laboratory's study, below: 0.2 to 0.5 US gallons an hour for passenger cars. A car that crawls burns more.
Minutes late: train trips x the minutes each runs late, plus the minutes waiting after missed connections, each week, times the weeks.
Bad ideas: the car trips a train would have made faster, as a share of all car trips, and the extra minutes they took.
Money: wasted hours x what an hour is worth to you, plus litres x what a litre costs you. Nothing until you put in a cost.
Complacency: four parts, each from 0 to 100. A year without looking for another way counts in full; so does every trip that leaves at the same time whatever the traffic, every late train never claimed for, and five years of putting up with it. The score is their average.
Society puts up with it too: in 2025 a driver in Rome lost 76 hours to traffic, 7% more than in 2024, and in Milan 67 hours, 5% more (INRIX 2025 Global Traffic Scorecard, as reported by Panorama, below).
